#1 Pandas fall asleep anywhere they feel like 🐼

In the wild giant pandas fall asleep in any number of places, they don’t have to be too picky as they don’t have any natural predators to worry about. Most will opt to sleep right on the forest floor, perhaps cozying up to a tree or some other large natural feature. Giant pandas are strong climbers and have also been spotted taking the occasional nap precariously balanced in a tree! If everyone believed in the way of the panda, the world would be a lot more peaceful, albeit unproductive!

#2 Elephants are the only known mammals to have a ritual for death

Honestly, elephants do it all. The ritual includes touching the bones gently with their trunks while remaining very quiet, covering the body with leaves and grass, and if the elephant belonged to their own, staying with the body for days or weeks at a time. #Respect!

#3 Cows have accents depending on the region. Moooo…? 🐄

Whaaaaat! They have accents? Who knew! And we thought all cows go ‘Mooooo’ just for the heck of it! If an Indian cow met a cow from the United States, they probably would have a hard time understanding each other! 🐮

#4 Vampire Bats feed on those who are injured or too weak to hunt for themselves. Any bats not helping the colony get kicked out 🦇

You’ve seen the movies where the culprit suffocates and kills the victim with a pillow. But as if scorpions weren’t dangerous enough already with their venomous stinging tails, we now have something else to think about – They can hold their breath for up to 6 straight days! These menacing crawlers are as tough as they come!

#6 Adult lions pretend to be hurt by the bites of their young to encourage their strength

Talk about great parenting! The kings of the jungle have a sensitive side to them as well! They pretend to be hurt by the ‘aggressive’ attempts made by their little cubs to ensure that they are always encouraged to be strong. This one melts our hearts. Lions apparently look for positive reinforcement! Who knew! 🦁

#7 Adult squirrels have been known to adopt abandoned baby squirrels

This one is stretching it a bit. But adult squirrels actually have a chance of adopting baby squirrels. According to an expert, it does happen but rarely. The chances of an abandoned baby squirrel being adopted is low as it is only possible if there is a nearby nursing squirrel. Talk about the goodness of parenthood!

#8 The longest recorded flight by a chicken was just over 13 seconds

A chicken traveled about 300 feet over the span of 13 seconds. I mean, we know it ain’t much, but it’s honest work. So let’s not discourage the achievement of chickenhood too much. Let’s instead hope another chicken breaks that record in our lifetime. Fly along, chicken (as high and far as you possibly can!)

#9 Koalas’ fingerprints are very close to human beings’

First things first, Koalas are not bears at all. In fact, they’re marsupials. Meaning they come under the same bracket as kangaroos. We know what you’re thinking. Ding-Ding-Ding! The pouch is a dead giveaway! But the fact that their fingerprints can be mistaken for a human being’s is surprising! If you’re planning to rob a bank, then you now know the perfect accomplice. Bella Ciao! (Seriously though, don’t rob banks. It’s wrong and illegal despite all the cool heist movies you might’ve seen)

#10 Rats simply cannot vomit 🤢

Rats cannot regurgitate or puke! Is that a boon? Is that a bane? Imagine us human beings getting food poisoning or alcohol poisoning. Will we just end up feeling sick and not throw up? Or would we not feel the effects of it at all? We believe the former is what most likely possible. So aren’t you glad we have the ability to vomit when our body rejects what we take in?

PS- This is why rat poison is so effective. It stays in their body and kills them as they can’t throw up the poison.

#11 Cats don’t mew as a way to communicate with each other

So why do they mew then? Yep! You thought right. They do it to get human attention. Cats rule the internet. Why though? That’s another simple answer. The reason cats meow exclusively at humans is simply because “cat language” doesn’t work on people!

#12 Birds are immune to the heat of Chili peppers

Yep! This one is as true as they come. Birds are immune to the spiciness of chili peppers! Birds do not have the receptors to detect the chemical ‘Capsaicin’, which is what makes chili peppers so spicy. Mammals avoid food containing as little as 100-100 parts per million of capsaicin whereas birds are content to consume up to 20,000 parts per million – that means food that’s 2% pure capsaicin! This is great for the chili plants as they rely on birds to consume their seeds and scatter them through their droppings in distant places where they can grow with less competition. It’s practically a WIN-WIN situation!

#13 An ostrich’s eye is bigger than its brain

Have you ever heard the term “Bird brain” being used to refer to a less intellectual individual? The largest bird of the animal kingdom, Ostrich, has large eyes too. So large in fact, that it is bigger than its own brain. At 2 inches in diameter, Ostrich’s eyes are great for their terrestrial lifestyle as they have huge photoreceptors.

#14 Butterflies can only see 3 colors 🦋

This one’s a gasper! How can butterflies be so colorful and majestic and yet be able to see only 3 colors? This is a fact to most butterflies. Although, there are a handful of species that can see more than just 3 colors as well. Just goes to show you, just cuz you don’t see something you have, doesn’t mean you don’t got it!

#15 Butterflies can also drink blood if the need arises

A little more on butterflies. These beautiful insects can even survive on blood if food is scarce. They not only like to sip from wet sand and mud, but male butterflies can also be found feeding on animal feces and even the rotting corpses of dead animals. That’s right! It drives them wild! They uncoil their proboscis and slurp away, lapping up the salts and amino acids they can’t get from flowers.

#16 Some types of crocodile can gallop

Strong? Check.

Deadly? Check.

Gallop? Check (Please have mercy!)

Certain kinds of these snapping water giants can actually gallop. But they don’t gallop very often unless they feel threatened. Just don’t piss them off.  Why crocodiles can gallop instead of alligators and caimans is still a bit of a mystery for the researchers, Hutchinson said, considering they descend from the same evolutionary ancestor. In fact, it’s not clear if alligators at one point in time had the ability to gallop and lost it to evolution, or if they were never able to gallop from the outset.

#17 Lionesses do 90% of the hunting

Lionesses indeed do the majority of the hunting. Lions, on the other hand, have the well-known reputation of just lion around in the shade. Lions are the ‘protectors’ of the pride. #18 Capuchin monkeys wash their hands and feet in urine

Monkeys are cute, no doubt! They can also be pretty darn gross. Capuchin monkeys, for example, urinate on their hands and feet when they’re feeling randy. According to experts, the alpha males might use urine-washing to convey warm, fuzzy feelings to females, that their solicitation is working and that there’s no need to run away. Or they could be doing it because they’re excited. Either way, we’re grossed out!

#19 Sharks glow in the dark

Sharks boast some enviable—and terrifying—features, like their sleek design and razor-sharp teeth. And while glow-in-the-dark sharks sound like something you’d see in a movie of the sci-fi kind, they’re totally real, as noted in a 2019 study published in iScience. Researchers were already aware that some shark species produce a glow that only other sharks can see, but now scientists have discovered that “previously unknown small-molecule metabolites are the cause of the green glow. This glow “helps sharks identify each other and even fight against infection on a microbial level.”

#20 A grizzly bear’s bite is strong enough to crush a bowling ball

Those who find themselves in the presence of a grizzly bear will surely want to stay out of reach of this animal’s super sharp claws. But they’ll certainly also want to keep out of the grizzly’s mouth, because these creatures “have a bite-force of over 8,000,000 pascals,” according to National Geographic. That means grizzly bears can literally crush a bowling ball between their jaws. Yikes! If we didn’t have enough reasons to not be around Grizzly bears, we now have one more to add to the list.
